Few
years ago I was extremely surprised when I saw one of mine friend has a
mysterious habit to sweep his room apparently more than hundred times a day. He
used to put his broom near his door and try sweeping it in every 10 minutes,
this kind of rituals always made him as funniest character among his entire
friend including me.
At that time I didn’t realize anything wrong
with him both his parents and siblings either. He was just a funny character among
us and we entertained a lot by watching his drama. We never ever questioned ourselves
why he is exhibiting those kinds of rituals??
After so many years his surprising actions and
his thoughts hunted me last night after reading an article on a psychological
problem with thoughts and actions or ritual which has really encouraged me to
put some my hidden memory on this post.
Many people all over the world has been living
with this kind of psychological problem called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
(OCD). Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors across the fine line between
the normality and disorder when they become so persistent that they interfere
with the way we live or when they cause distress. As an illustration, keeping
the room clean by sweeping 2-3times a day is normal, sweeping every 10minutes
and 100times a day is not.
The
obsessive and compulsion are representing our thoughts and behaviors
respectively. Obsessions are involuntary, recurring, and unwanted thoughts that
cause feelings of anxiety or dread. They are irrational and interfere with
normal thinking. Compulsive behaviors are repeated to try to control the obsessive
thoughts.
Obsessions (repetitive thoughts)
mostly concern with dirt, germs, or toxins and something terrible happening
such as fire, death, illness. Compulsions (repetitive behavior) manifest in the
form of excessive hand washing, bathing, tooth brushing, or grooming and
repetitive rituals in/out of a door. Performing rituals provides temporary
relief from the anxiety created by the obsessive thoughts.
The cause of OCD is unknown, but
research suggests that it may relate to a biochemical imbalance that interferes
with the way the brain processes information and causes the brain to send false
messages of danger. OCD may be a learned response to reduce anxiety or may be triggered
by a stressful event.
Living
with OCD in society is so embarrassment and you feel stigmatized by your
friends, and family members as my friend had felt especially when he had seen
we were laughing at him as a result his whole personality was affected.
Now I realized he actually didn’t sweep his room
but he used to release his anxiety in the form of compulsion (repetitive behavior). So
I am requesting you don’t laugh your friends' irrational or unwanted behavior
you can help them by just saying please visit the psychiatrist or psychologist.
What do you think? Choice is yours!!
